What to Do When a Basic Septic System Will Not Work at a

Overview:
Tennessee has
many small communities without sewer systems. Typically located at old
crossroads, these small communities may not have many structures, but number
of structures per square mile is fairly high. The homes and businesses
(built before the 1970s) have individual septic systems that are problems
waiting to happen. Before the 1970s, regulations were not in place to
ensure that these systems were sized appropriately for the flow and for the
soil. Additionally, it is very likely that the actual wastewater flow has
increase as compared to thirty years ago. If a large percentage of septic
systems have failed within a small community, this becomes a community
problem rather than an individual owners problem. An engineered solution
is needed.
This workshop has
assembled a group of presenters that will address the challenges of placing
a domestic onsite wastewater renovation system at locations that demand
alternative approaches. The discussion will range from alternative repairs
for individual systems, to developing a community system using effluent
sewers.
